I was bowled over this morning by the "Anonymous" responses to the Cole Show articles. The majority appear to be novices to circus business and I tried to reply to a few but they were blocked by my old friend AOL. So I will try to answer in this fashion, Yes they are live elephants, I come from a circus family and all these pictures have been accumulated from the 1860's to date, the Cole Show finished out the 1945 season and came out bigger and better in 1946, no I don't think there was any sabotage involved dispite the fact that there was another derailment the following year and finally, elephants do indeed have excellent balance as demonstrated by "Sophie" and her astonishingly handsome trainer.

Read your e-mail. I just wrote you about this subject and my thoughts about the person asking the question. I haven't figured out how to post other then anonymous yet. All my names are rejected.
I imagine some "anonymous" comments may come from blogspoters who have stumbled upon the site without a circus/animals background. Buckles, if they're coming back for more you're doing something very right!
Folks posting comments and tired of seeing themselves listed as "anonymous" can try using "Other" in Choose an Identity. That makes it easy to type in a name in the box appropriately labeled "Name".
Sometimes we forget how common train wrecks once were both inside and outside the circus world. I remember around 1962 my grandparents decided to build a "bomb shelter" in their backyard. In came the backhoe, and the cement mixer and all that. A couple weeks later it was done and the yard resodded. Then, low and behold a month later a freight train derailed three block away carrying a massive cargo of Busch Bavarian Beer. My grandfather immediately filled the bomb shelter with hops products and never worried about the Russians again.

You are so right. Can't wait to see pictures of Barbara with the elephants. Then you will really see the master. Is that Mistress? I have never seen Barbara in the ring without everything perfect. What every show girl should strive to be. They are the perfect circus couple. I always admired them. Barbara always tried to help me be more of a show girl. I just did not have THAT look. I did ok with the animals.
