"Gentry Babe"

I'm sure everyone has seen "Around the World in 80 Days" made in 1956. (the good version) This is the elephant that was used, she was owned by Gene Holter and handled by Wally Ross, at left but as soon as she stepped on the back lot she was under the supervision of the man at right George Emerson. Beatty-Cole Circus

This is an interesting Beatty-Cole picture, from the angle it was taken the elephant looks 30' tall, no idea who the girl is, the elephant is probably "Pete". Those unaware, Fred Logan had a serious operation Wednesday for internal bleeding. As far as I know he is recovedring and is in the Venice Hospital.

This is a 7-act Barbara and I worked, a double pyramid with a hind leg walk passing between. With so many calves born up at the Stud Farm, Ken & Nicole could easily duplicate something like this, in fact the program cries out for it but it requires a ring. I have a Bob Sabia tape showing Walter McLain appearing in a benifit show at St. Martha's Church in Sarasota showing at least eight elephants in the ring and possibly more. These were bigger elephants and lots of traffic.

This is one of the first pictures I sent out when I first learned to scan year before last. It got quite a bit of comment. The African must surely be "Kongo" but I don't see Gunther anywhere. When he worked the act he was all over the place, that might be him leading the band.

This is how we remember Gunther and "Kongo" and I must admit, he was truly kissed by the Gods. When he first came over and we all debated his talents, the elephant trainers decided that he was basically a cat and horse trainer, on the other hand, the cat trainers announced that he was a horse and elephant trainer and so forth. But it didn't take long before I started concluding the arguments by saying "Gentlemen, 100 years from now, Circus Historians will record us as minor personalities during the Gunther Gebel Williams Era". Today I will even go so far as to say that those same Historians will also record that his death and the death of The Greatest Show on Earth will coincide precisely.

Great Wallace Shows early 1900's

I sometimes find the people in these old pictures more interesting than the subject matter. These are well dressed enough to be on their way to church rather than walking thru a circus menagerie. In this window to the past, everyone wears a hat, even the candy butchers at left. I'm late this morning I wasn't informed that Patrick had to be at school an hour earlier and to further complicate matters, the first ice on the windshield this winter.
