I've always thought the glamour of these floats was wrecked by them appearing on a muddy lot or road. But perhaps in the day EVERYTHING was on a muddy road, so the locals didn't think anything about it.

In CIRCUS DOCTOR, Don Henderson wrote of the show trying to work muddy tracks by putting straw down. He noted the floats gathered the straw in front of them until they stalled. Extra horses and elephants were needed to move them, and Spec was a disaster. Doc also said most audiences were sympathetic for the show's efforts to go on.
