The Civil War which ended in the spring of 1865

claimed more lives than any conflict in our history

and required the establishment of the country’s

first national cemeteries

In 1997, my mother and I toured the battlefield memorial at Vicksburg, Mississippi. They should all be visited and atudied, but just this one alone speaks to the scope of this war. The drive-through involves some 16 miles, and takes hours to stop at each place of battle and recognize the reality coming to your senses.
