Cap Curtis invented a spool truck posted here by Buckles that required horses to pull the canvas out sideways. It created great drag that soon wore down the fabric. The spool we see here proved the answer. As some of us recall, the truck began on one end of the layout, then slowly progressed, unspooling as the boys walked it down. For tear-down, once the top was rolled, the truck reversed and spooled the heavy canvas up one roll at a time, all but eliminating access drag wear. Old Cap was a great circus inventor, and his ideas led to welcome labor-saving innovations, including those improved with further thought.
