Looking at the boiler and those whistles, this thing must have been deafening. How did the horses and elephants stand it?

I remember dates with Uncle Sid Kellner's James Bros., when his minor, latter-day version of a calliope shook the windows of nearby schools, businesses, and homes. Sid had an incorrigible sense of humor, and gleefully enjoyed the attentions of his confounded listeners.

TONY's question about the effects on show animals may hopefully be addressed as getting used to it somehow over long seasons. But yes, these things were ear-shattering for sure.
