I have not seen the 1901 ref. But thereafter we have two dates. Both of these bear the weight of authenticity. The one I have to go with is from the International Genealogical Index, which lists Clyde Raymond Beatty being born on June 10, 1902, in Bainbridge, Ross County, Ohio. When Beatty was interred in the Courts Of Remembrance Mausoleum, at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, his widow, Jane, ordered 1902-1965 for his plaque. His early entries on passenger manifests, when he went to Europe several times, also state 1902. Later such manifests, as when he and Harriett played the then-Territory of Hawaii, state their ages reflecting his as 1902 and hers as 1909--both dates appearing on their respective grave markers, and I've been to both. The big question is, why does the major index have him officially registered as born in 1902, while other sources list him a year later?

But Dave Price received a note, hand-written by Beatty's sister, Madeline, and signed by his mother, Margaret, that he was born June 10, 1903. This is the date seen most often. At Beatty's mausoleum, I wondered how Jane got the birth year wrong. By other evidence, she knew the correct date and got it right. But the controversy lives on, and we remember the old saying, "A little mystery becomes the proud."

This photo was taken by the Lentz Bros. of Peru Indiana at the American Circus Corporation winter quarters. As a glass plate negative, this is just one of the circus photos that survived a fire in the Lentz Bros. studio.

That round concrete pad still exists to this day.
