Chuck came to the Ringling show with an extensive performance background. In terms of convenience, this did not serve him well. For the big production numbers, he had to remove his whiteface and dance the routines minus the motley. Then, for the night show, he had to apply his complicated clown face again, protesting to an unsympathetic dressing room, "I'm the only one on the show who has to do two makeups--and for the same money!"
