Notice the dour faces in this one and #3. Maybe we can understand. Circusing was tougher then than we might realize, especially with the wagon shows, and smiles were at a premium.

A circus musician was expected to play the parade, then a formal center ring concert prior to the performance, then to play non-stop for a three hour show and then to do it again for the night show. All that under all weather conditions under the big top. There wasn't a lot of free time, so taking time out to pose for a formal portrait was probably not high on their list of things to do.

You forgot they played the Wild West aftershow. And they might have also been the side-show band.
