"The One & Only"

Clyde Beatty and Nero, in the Peru, Indiana Winterquarters. It was Nero who, in early 1932, attacked Beatty, putting him in Dukes Memorial Hospital for some 12+ weeks. The publicity boys got it on the wire services, and the resultant sensation led to his first book, THE BIG CAGE (Universal, 1933). Studio chief Carl Laemmle snatched up the film rights, and won quick clearance from John Ringling for Beatty's starring role under the same title. His co-stars included veteran character actor Raymond Hatton, and 13-year-old Mickey Rooney. The book and the film were so closely released that stills from the movie appear in the book.
