If that's rosin on their heels, it may explain the incomplete tights.

In HOSSES AND THEIR BOSSES, Ballantine quotes George Hanneford, Sr., extolling at length the virtues of rosin as the absolute saving grace of circus performing. Around Clyde Beatty, an extreme was taken. We melted the beeswax, and mixed in rosin to firm up the whip poppers. I'd stir the mix until it hardened, then scooped it out and formed it into blocks to stack in the whipbox. That, gentle readers is old Old School. Mr. Hanneford was right. Rosin once and forever.
