GeeGee Engesser

When I first met Gee Gee and Billy Powell in 1965, they had this act, GEE GEE'S ALASKANS, on Howard Suesz. We made friends at once, since Gee Gee was like that, and never a better circus woman have I met.

The old story goes that an excited show guy busted in on Jimmy Douglas's busy sewing day, announcing he had decided to "make an act of Huskies, like Gee Gee!" Without looking up, Jimmy muttered, "You may have Huskies, but you'll never have them like Gee Gee."

When Gee Gee passed, I was grateful to see her extensive obituary widely printed in the newspapers, with a photo of her Huskie act. I thought at the time what a fine notice this was, first for a woman of the circus, and then for an animal trainer in an era of activists opposing performing animals. Even in losing her, we have Gee Gee prevailing in worldwide print.
