Sometimes, the big top had to be tied down to trucks because a lot owner would not OK stakes in the asphalt. Most times, stake holes had to be filled with Sacrete after the show. I remember where one town health department, at the last minute, also demanded the asphalt be washed down with Clorox after closing. Hasty gallon bottle buy at Wal-Mart ensued!

I recognize this as Circus Vargas setting up at Rivergate Mall in Goodletsville Tn, a suburb of Nashville. This was in the mid seventies after Vargas made his cross country tour to the east coast. He then played Florida over the winter and routed back to the west coast the next year. This stop was on his way back. It was my understanding that the mall did not allow setup on the asphalt, and setup was supposed to be on a rough rocky dirt area behind the mall parking lot which may have been muddy also. I was told there was lot of flak when they set up on asphalt, the details of which I do not know.

I recall the many asphalt lots we played on the '81 Beatty show normally cost Johnny Pugh at least a dollar a hole to have a contractor sand-fill, tamp, and re-surface. Cindy Potter will recall more details.
