I think Thousand Oaks is in

the Southern fire disaster

It was on the news this morning that half of our counties fire crews have left to help fight the fires in the southern half of the state. Will take two days to drive over there and will stay for two weeks or more. p.j.holmes

Thousand Oaks suffered 12 deaths in the shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill, the night of the 7th. The next day, wildfires began in that region we call the Conejo Valley.

At the same time, all of the City of Malibu was evacuated, and most of it was lost. From Thousand Oaks, I used to take CA 101 down to Topanga Canyon Road, and make the perilous drive through the mountains and canyons, on down to Malibu Beach. I'd stroll the sands there, gazing over to the secluded, forbidden alcoves of the movie colony. What they had there is what has been devastated by this recent firestorm.

This is the redoubtable Tony Gentry, whom some readers might recall as trying to get a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame for a chimp he had. Tony claimed the chimp was the original Cheetah chimp from Johnny Weissmuller's 12 TARZAN films, and by then was 75 years old. Honorary Hollywood Mayor Johnny Grant investigated, as they always do for the sidewalk honors, and in no time found out Tony was untruthful. The star was denied, Tony died at 86, and a nephew of his took the chimp, still trying to claim he was "the" Cheetah.

At Jungleland, I couldn't help but like Tony. He was colorful, and actually did begin his career with Frank Buck. Tony worked on dozens of films featuring wild animals, but some of his personal accomplishments carried very amusing embellishments.
