I played in the band on Circus Kirk back in the 1970s, and was on the big top crew. There were two planks in the blues that were slightly different sized (and much heavier) than the rest of the planks. Somewhere along the line I heard that they were picked up from the Mills Brothers, and were of oak instead of pine.
