The lady's name is a play on words. Melenite is the name the French gave (ca. 1887) to the explosive Picric Acid - one of the first compounds used to fill artillery shells. Melenite could withstand the shock of being fired from a cannon without itself exploding (a useful capability if you care about your artillery crews!).
Here is the Cirque D'Ete, or Circus of Summer. The Bougliones still give us the Circus of Winter, the still-beloved Cirque D'Hiver, affectionately called the DEE-vay.
