The Prince & the Princess with
"The One And Only" & 2 of the
next royal generation
At Lighthouse Field in Philly
during a visit to the Princess's
family in the eary 60s
Grace Kelly's family owned a home in Ocean City, New Jersey and it was not unusual to see the royal couple, before they were married to be attendance at circuses that played in the resort town when the price was visiting.
During my first week with Beatty, I became his personal driver. So on the mornings I saw him drive off alone, I wondered why he hadn't summoned me. Much later, why became clear. His discomforts had increased, and after noting this to Grace and Ranier, they got him in with the elite-class Philadelphia doctors most patients waited months to see. I later learned they had given him the works, but it was 1964, and all their diagnostics missed his cancer. He soldiered on, at last unable to eat at all, until he departed the show in Rochester, MN, leaving many to think he had entered the Mayo Clinic there. He had gone to Billings Hospital, in the University of Chicago Hospitals complex, for his first cancer surgery. He did not return that season. There are, of course, many more details I witnessed in a long, tragic story.
