Does anyone know who was

1st to use bentwood cairs

I understand about the 4

legs to keep the cat eyes

constantly in motion

The older chairs became

heavier with hardware

For details on this hardware, I wrote the article "Gaffing Beatty's Chairs", for the May 15, 1999 issue of Cheri Valentine's BACK YARD. Primary and maintenance gaffing of his chairs was one of the many jobs which fell to me in that blessed baptism-by-fire summer of '64.

Beatty himself said that chairs had been handled in the cage before his time, but his use of them became among his signature effects.

(I lost the "H" in chair)

In my time during Beatty's last

few years (61 - 65) the chairs

were painted white (I think)

A few had no or broken seats
