Rink was the first black man I know of to become Superintendent of Elephants on a major American circus. He held this post for Al. G. Barnes in the very early 20th century, when a black circus man almost never ascended to a title. He must have done very well to be entrusted with a herd as prestigious as Barnes trouped, and he had the job for at least 4 seasons. As we see here, he was also famed for his comedy equine acts.
