Looking closely, I don't find Emmett Kelly here, in or out of makeup. But he wrote of his seasons on this show, reminding latter-day showfolks that you never toured on a circus until you trouped with a wagon show like Mighty Haag.

When I was a first of May on RBBBC all I ever heard about was "mud shows" and how distasteful they were compared to RBBBC. It turned out that I preferred them to the steril buildings even though we sometimes had to dance in old corn fields. It had a certain flavor or reality to circus. I had found a job that I loved and really... how many people in the world can say that they loved their job.

This is exactly what Kelly was saying, DARLENE. He was writing about the real thing. The Feld's Dick Brown, manager of the Venice quarters, joined their philosophy in scoffing at mud shows. I reminded him that when the Ringling show WAS the Ringling show, being the biggest, it was also the biggest mud show afield, laboring in more mud than any other three shows combined.
