Those are B-flat soprano saxophones the girls are playing. Soprano saxes were popular back in 1920s. Some of the musicals I've played for over the years that were set back in the 1920s called for soprano saxes to add a "period" sound the music.
Lots of negativity when the Hilton Twins did a movie which included in the story, one of the girls marring a man. That just did not take, heaven forbid, one husband in bed with his wife while her joined sister joined to the hip of of his wife during romantic events. I guess the only thing she could read was a book while the her sister participatedin wifely duties. At that time, that was just a little too much for the average audience, although actually never shown on camera, the implication was there. Jackie LeClaire
