I recall this photo captioned as 1963, in Detroit. This was the last full season Clyde Beatty worked, and the last in which he still had his health. When I joined him in '64, his cancer was underway, but still undiagnosed. When it took serious hold, he had his first cancer surgery in August, at Billings Hospital, in Chicago, and was pronounced then as terminal. Desperately ill, he returned in early '65 and worked his full act. The cancer accelerated, and his try at a season was cut short in Salisbury, Maryland. He collapsed in the backyard after his matinee. Jane Beatty took him back to Billings, and doctors there advised him to go home. He died at 2:30 p.m., on July 19, at Community Memorial Hospital, in Ventura. Just last month, I returned once again to pay my respects to his place of interment, in Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.
