I believe this i a Hopi snake dancer in which case it would be a male. These dancers worked in teams of 2 or three. One worked with the snake while the others waved feather fans in front of the snake to distract it. The snake dancer often held the snake in his mouth and the snake was returned to where it was found at the end of the dance. This seems like a rather large snake for the ceremony.

That looks like a big diamondback rattlesnake. Quite venomous and not something to play with.
