These photos are all just fantastic. I have an audio recording from my great-grandmother Kittie Mae Irwin, whose family performed with Ringling and about 10 other circuses as aerial artists from mid 1880s to the end of WWI. In one of her audio recordings, she mentions traveling through the Midwest USA during WWI with a circus whose "head elephant man" (as she described him) was called "Old Leonard." Sadly, she doesn't name the circus, but from the tone of her voice she seemed to have great respect for him. Does that nickname ring familiar, by any chance?
