Just received this photo from Toby Stiles.  Is it photoshoped?  Dated 1955 were there that many elephant's on Ringling.  Look at all the babies.

i was born in 1954. Hard to imagine in my lifetime it has gone from this amazing sight to zip, zilch, nada. You have to wonder how the carriage and wagon builders felt watching the first "horseless carriage" roll off the assembly line................

I was born I 55 and feel the same way. When my daughter was about two, I was lamenting to my dad that we were raising a generation of kids who can't tie their shoes (Velcro straps), can't tell time (digital clocks), can't add or subtract ( calculators that fit in your hand), and can't count change (smart cash registers). Dad asked, "can you drive a buggy or hitch up a buggy?". I replied, " no". He said, times change, new stuff comes along for the better". He was right of course, but we don't have to like it. Cherish those memories, hold them dear in our hearts. Share the stories of those who came before us with those who follow us so the memories will stay alive. Thank you, Buckles

Imagine Sonny Ridley. He's outlived Hugo, Axel, and now the elephants.......

And now that we've learned to love them we can be happy that they can walk and maybe run and play in the grass. Did you ever see an elephant run except in the ring?

1955 Ringling had the Mommas in the Park spec and they had a mess of carriages with punks being pushed by their moms. I am pretty sure that is Smokey Jones on the dapple leading the pack. I think they had around fifty elephants.

"off to the races" runaways both as
