Back then, the Blue Unit would always open with an elephant long-mount. During the Sunday matinee performance in San Diego in 1970, a video crew was taping material for a Jerry Lewis TV special. Although Charly’s tiger act opened the second half of the performance that year, for some reason, they moved it up to open the first half of that performance. They also eliminated the elephant long mount for that performance. I assumed that they didn’t want to have tigers and elephants together in the arena at the same time. I believe that the 108th edition was the first one to open with an elephant long mount followed by the tiger act. Later, Gunther kept his tigers in the same tent with the elephants.
