Charlie the elephant and strongman/stuntman/actor Joe Bonomo in a still from the 1925 silent serial THE GREAT CIRCUS MYSTERY. In his autobiography THE STRONGMAN, Bonomo devotes a chapter to Charlie and his sad fate: while filming a big top fire sequence, the big top unexpectedly started to collapse, causing the hundreds of extras inside to panic and make a wild rush for the exits. In all the confusion, Charlie started running and accidentally killed someone who had been knocked down. Charlie had killed a handler earlier and, as a result of this accidental death, he was ordered to be executed. (Someone said that his skull is now on display in one of the Los Angeles museums.)
