1994 #1

Hard to believe it's been over twenty years since the train wreck.

I remember this day WELL. I happened to be the person that watched Tony and Christofer until Patty arrived. Christofer was minus one shoe and wanted to back and retrieve it. That was out of the question. So, I just tried to keep things calm until Patty arrived.

I haven't seen the Ringling Show in some time and of course once the elephants are gone I wouldn't go if it was across the street.

This was a very unfortunate and sad day for many. I heard of this accident while on the road following behind Ben homeward bound. I was listening to the news then gave Ben a shout on the CB radio.

I was at John Herriott's old place helping the Col. and Ian Garden put together Ian's grey Welsh pony act. Mary Ruth had been sent to the house for some "infraction" :) and she returned 10 min. later with the new's. We of course were stunned, myself especially as I and my son's had just left the show a month prior and lived in the "Baumann" half of the rail car that Ted was killed in, the "Gautier" half. I drove up to Orlando the next day and there were more elephant men standing around the elephant tent then you would see at an Elephant Managers convention. I remarked to Suzanna Smith that it looked like Ringling had more then enough help and she said, "yes, if vultures circling is help, then we are covered." After leaving Ringling in 1994, I returned in 2004 at the behest of my son's. I returned one more time in, I think 2009 when they played Robarats Arena. Nicole Feld, who is a fine lady, heard I was there and found me on the lot jackpotting. "Wade," she said, I haven't seen you in year's." "Yes", I said, and you most likely will not see me for many more years. I came today on the off chance GGW and Charly had returned and I missed the press release, and to also see how in the world you were going to get the Greatest Show On Earth into little Robarts Arena. Sonny told me Hugo still hadn't returned, but if he showed up he would probably be with GGW and Charly and he(Sonny) would let me know. I also learned getting the Greatest Show On Earth into Robarts Arena was not as difficult as I suspected. It was simply a matter of leaving 3/4 of it loaded on the train. My best to your father and sister." That is all I ever needed to see again. It was kind of like watching a fat old wrinkled, toothless Sally Rand limping around the stage reenacting the fan dance. You would feel more pity then excitement..............

I'm alongside Buckles and Wade. Nothing would make me look at this Feld thing again.
