The NY Times just had a story on the elephants at the Bronx zoo.

They owned two elephants named "Grumpy" and "Happy" from an original group of seven named for the seven dwarfs in the Disney movie. Howard Johnson's Dopey and Bashful must be from this same herd.

I feel I have a pretty good handle on most of these animals but there are a few I haven't the slightest. Anyone care to add a bit of history to these names ?
D. Cristiani - Babe & Suwan
Schmitt Bros - Alita
Royal Ranch - Tudy
C&B - Hugo, Kenny, Geneva, Bombay, Remo
Howard Johnson - India
What a great way to celebrate Independence Day weekend with this elephant history from the Bicentennial !

Phenomenal, for sure. Where the hell else are you gonna see a list like this?

I count 244. Doesn't include zoos etc. I think I heard recently the entire north american herd total s less than 250. So Sad.

Larry, I may be off by a few, but my current listing ( zoos and privately owned ) totals about 456.

This list includes the last of the regular imports of Asian elephants before the passage of the Endangered Species Act. I have heard different stories as to which was the actual "last" but that is not of importance. My question - is there one main country that the elephants were coming in from ? Or was it a hodgepodge of what became available by the buyers in Asia ?
