Barbara Byrd, told me it was John Carroll's money that started showman's rest in Hugo.
It is a real treat to go a see all the tributes on the markers of great show folks,
that are gone to the big top in the sky.

The story I heard was, John Carroll never picked up his pay. It so accumulated over his many seasons, that he at last went to D.R. Miller, asking him to invest the stash for him, since John did not understand the intricacies of finance. Mr. Miller put the money in some interest-bearing account, which accumulated importantly. John especially asked that veteran showfolks, who toiled for negligible reward, have at least a decent burial. One wonders how many now rest in peace at Mt. Olivet, thanks to the showman's heart of John Carroll.
