Great Pic ! Thanx for another terrific Blog day.
I was there to see this. The Moore elephant team only made about 6 blocks of the parade pulling this tab. Smokey Jones said they were straining mightily, and he was afraid they might rupture themselves. So a block or two past the reviewing stand in front of the Pfister Hotel he took them out of the parade. Pulling that tab should have been a cinch for two elephants. They never knew just what was wrong.
Thank you for your comment Richard. I was pondering along similar lines. Maybe something with the brakes or the axles??
The elephant carvings on either side were those which graced our World Jungle Compound sign out front, and later our Jungleland sign. This sign was mounted above what was for many years the main entrance. In my era, '65-'69, those doors were locked, and the public bought tickets from Elsie Wood's tiny booth next to the big jungle-style gate, through which they were admitted. These carvings, of course, were later restored to Baraboo, but after our closing auction of Oct. 8-9, 1969.
