Ed Sullivan #1 (From Eric Beheim)

Great pictures from one of our appearances on the Sullivan Show continuing a long standing arrangement done many times before by Peggy and Mack MacDonald  with "Baby Opal" and arranged by Al Dobritch.
This was the first time the show taped in Color.

Was this performance taped on the stage normally used for the show, or was this act done on a bigger side stage that had more room. You used to have a link to one of the videos taped of the act, what became of that? Is there any way to view your appearances on YouTube?

Buckles, could you give us a description of what was involved in making an appearance on the show, such as where did you keep the elephants until you got the cue to go on and perform the act.

These frame enlargements were taken from the DVD ED'S AMAZING ANIMAL ACTS, which is readily and inexpensively available.

Not only did you have color, you had circus music! Really looked good. All previous performances by Peggy and/or Mack used the same classical type music. I think the arrangements are here someplace. On the Tape we have, Mack works once alone, they start out together once with two elephants and Peggy works alone with Opal at other times. Always pretty much the same routine. I have copies of the News where Mack is given a ticket for walking Opal on the sidewalk. I guess I could send it as it is 60 years old.

In FACING THE BIG CATS, read Clyde Beatty's account of working the Sullivan show. He wanted to set up on the parking lot, where he and the animals would have decent footing and proper space, but his great friend Sullivan insisted the cage be set on his stage. It proved a disaster. The props, animals, and the trainer all slipped on the linoleum and chaos reigned. Sullivan cut the cameras away from the melee, and tried to calm the studio audience by introducing a wild-eyed Walter Brennan. It was another case of an outsider who knew nothing of cage acts telling the trainer how to work. Beatty was on Sullivan 4 times, but this was sure as hell the last.

This was the first time that we did the Sullivan Show. "AND THE FIRST TIME IN COLOR". So this was done in the Studio 54 theater. It was bigger. They were redoing Their studio for color. But Sullivan's studio was small. They did not make it any larger. This one was much bigger.....Barbara.....
