The Wallendas #4

This photo was taken about 1928, shortly after the Wallendas came to America to perform in the Ringling-Barnum Circus. Following their debut performance, they received an incredible 15-minute ovation, which has never been equaled.

When this ovation broke out, Karl and the troupe gathered backstage in dejection. Such an outburst in Europe, according to author Dean Jensen's telling, means the act is being humiliated. Fred Bradna ran back to explain their success--they had stopped the show, and New York was going wild. Karl led his troupe back out for bows to American accolades he now understood.
