This is Charlie LaBird, Jr. He was born in 1900 while his parents Charles, Sr. and Ella were trouping with the Great American Shows as documented in the New York Clipper. This family was passionate about the circus. They trouped with some great names (but never really received notoriety). They survived the best and worst of times. Charlie, Jr. often clowned with his brother Iza LaBird. Photos of Iza are rare because he loved cinematography and was usually behind the camera. Charlie Jr's life as a clown was cut short in 1952 when he was killed by a passing automobile while trying to repair the stalled truck they were driving between Wallace Bros. shows. He never married or had children. The circus was his life. His brother Iza (my father) never recovered from that tragedy and soon after left the circus for good.
