From Richard Reynolds

Samson stood at 10'- 10" at the shoulder, that makes him the size of Jumbo.
Barnum would never allow his great elephant to be accurately measured but all evidence says that he was a couple of inches short of 11 feet.
William Blackburne was on Barnum's show when Jumbo was there and said the inside of his special rail car measured exactly 11 feet from floor to ceiling and there was always room for a man's hand between the top of his shoulder to the ceiling.

I am sitting at my computer transfixed with the thought, "Charlie, go fetch a ladder and take it inside Jumbo's car then place your hand on top of his shoulder and let me know how much room there is."

Many thanks Richard. Do you know what he weighed?

I've always had a lot of respect, for, among other things, the guys who get in those rail cars and tether those bulls.
