I once asked Smokey how he got this job and he said while Louie Reed and he were working on the 20 newly imported babies the previous summer in Sarasota (1954) they needed an act for the Winter Quarters tourists, so he put a number together with three old retired cows and one day after working the act a gentleman approached him and said, "Hell! That's better than what we got on the show, how would you like to take over the herd?" He went to Louie and asked who that guy was and he said "Henry Ringling North".
