I'd guess this was about 1963 because it refers to the ill-fated boat circus venture then went out to tour the Canadian Maritimes. "Forced to join a carnival" sounds a bit demeaning to folks in that business (apologies to Jim Elliot!) but the carnival which they joined was the King Reid Shows out of Vermont. I saw the remnants of Dory's show that fall at the Eastern States Exposition (now known as the Big E). King Reid, by the way (and that was his name), was a long time Vermont state legislator whose fine carnival had the big Eastern State date for many years.

My great friend, the late Okie Carr, was on that tour and told me he and the animals barely got off the sinking ship. King Reid took them on as a magnanimous gesture to fellow showfolks. Someone got too excited over this and informed me Reid could be persuaded to add a cat act to his carnival. With Leonard Farley as my go-between, Reid took my call, but explained he was only helping D.R.'s circus and had no further interest thereafter.
