I realize Keenan Wynn was a pretty good actor, but he sure seemed to be a pretty good elephant man when he was on camera with Anna May. (Of course she'd read the script and knew what she was to do and where her marks were!). Actually Mr. Wynn seemed to be a natural at handling her, or was that just his acting and his very capable co-star?
Keenan Wynn didn't have to be on the set for two days, but he came and studied Ben & I. All our actions with Anna May, our tone of voice, our movements, everything. Then he came to me and ask me if I would speak to the Director, about the words we spoke to Anna May. (He said that the director wouldn't listen to an old actor.) So we changed her name to her real name, and the words to the words that we use with elephants. And Keenan convinced Anna May he was a real bull man. He really worked her. He was not only a terrific actor but a good bull man as well. And on top of that a great guy. His wife was with him. Her name was "Sharley." Very nice lady. He was a lot like a show bum.....Barbara....
Is that you Barbara hiding behind
Keenan & is that the longest hair
Ben ever had
Thanks, Barbara for answering my question. After watching you, Buckles, Ben, Gary Hill and the rest of the troop working the herd, I could tell that Keenan might have the makings of a real "bull man". He seemed to be a natural at it, but spoke like a bull man. Thanks for sharing.
Yes that is me. And yes that is the longest Ben's hair ever was....Barbara....
