Buffalo Bill #2

Buffalo Bill ends on a bittersweet note with Bill making a “farewell speech” to the audience at the close of the last performance of his Wild West Show in 1913. (Actually, this was not quite his last public appearance. In 1914-15, he toured with the Sells-Floto Circus and in 1916 he was with the Miller Bros. 101 Ranch Show.) Bill passed away in 1917.

Joel McCrea was among the Hollywood colony long established around Thousand Oaks. I'd see him around town, most often at Harold's House of Omelettes, which is still there. He was in his late 60s, still impressive at 6'2", and genuinely cordial to diners who recognized him. Only twice did I see him with his wife, Frances Dee. By the mid-1960s, her illnesses were advancing, and she was usually secluded at their expansive ranch. A rare, thoroughly decent gentleman among the top stars, it is further reassuring that he and Frances shared 57 years together.

Thank you for these wonderful words Roger. I've always been a big fan of Mr McCrea's and I genuinely appreciate knowing what a fine person he was.
