Being a "polar" was a very dangerous job because the front wheel could hit a small object and cause the pole to swing throwing the polar. Cap Curtis invented a simple safety feature. He had short chain that could easily just be hooked from the front of the wagon body to the 5th wheel asembly and when the wagon was lined up straight to the runs it was easily hooked and allowed the wagon to only turn very slightly. We used it on most of the big wagons at CWM.The polars sure liked it. When the wagon was unloaded and snubbed down the runs it was unhooked.
