1960 James Christy #5

This may have been the first time this trick was photographed which later would become Barbara's best known pose.

The stand up mount was first done on the three elephants sit up feet to back. Buckles and I couldn't agree where it should go. I wanted to o it alone, (as it was later done.) With doing it on the feet to back the other elephants were moving "Anna May" making it harder to balance. And we were right over the ring curb, if I lost my balance I would fall on the ring curb. Buckles said it was repeating a trick. And he was right. But I felt it was worth it. As it turned out it became my signature mount, and was worth repeating......Barbara.....

And it remained matchless. We've all acknowledged highly representative Elephant Empresses, but none projected the style, flash, and excitement of pure circus as Barbara does in one iconic photo.
