Tundra #24

Meanwhile, Alaska’s bush pilots have been conducting an extensive air search in a desperate attempt to locate Barlow amid thousands of square miles of wilderness. When the search proves unsuccessful, Barlow’s friend “Mac” (the bearded man with the “Smokey Bear” hat) volunteers to make the arduous overland trek to Noonak on the slim chance that doctor might be able to reach it on foot.

Good ol Smokey wore a "campaign"

hat that became popular in early

wars but are still used by Park

Rangers Boy Scouts & The Mounties

I was told by a ranger at Rocky Mountain National Park that the hat was adopted from the U.S. Cavalry, which had the duty of protecting the parks before the National Park Service was created. (Some of the Parks were created before there was a Park Service.)
