According to my brother, who lives in Anchorage, Alaska’s musk oxen had been hunted to extinction by the early 1900s. In 1930, 34 musk oxen were captured in East Greenland and brought to Fairbanks. This group was then transferred to Nunivak Island, a large island in the Bering Sea. The Nunivak herd eventually grew to a sufficient size so that there were enough musk oxen available to be released back into the wild in various parts of Alaska. Today, there are about 4,000 of them living wild in Alaska. (If TUNDRA’s musk oxen sequence was, in fact, filmed in Alaska, than it most likely was done on Nunivak Island.)
