1990 Circus Vargas #11

From my 1990 Journal.
I vaguely recall the USDA incident, "Diamond" was one of the Africans, I think it was a stiff leg.
Can't imagine why I was interested in the attendance, maybe my wife had negotiated a cut on the front door.

I 1st met Betty & Phil Escalante

in 1960 when I worked in "Stock"

for "The Music Fairs" a cluster

of tented summer theaters & Phil

was their canvas boss & they ran

the concessions at the Camden top

for the season & that was when I

met director Dick Barstow

Yes, he did. Reed was in Rex'a herd when I visited at Lion Country in Grand Prairie, Texas. This is after my season there in '76. The park gave Rex some heat over Reed. He told me he explained to them it was better to keep him active with that leg than let him do nothing, but the locals took an attitude, which was something rather ill-advised with Rex Williams.

It was likely in the late 70s

that Rex & Ava were touring with

the Coronas (Ava's family) Thrill

Show & Reed was working then with

a few other elephants (thanks)
