You will notice that in those days the center ring faced the front track and the end rings worked facing the back side.

A hippodrome track and the historic rings AKA three ring ( Circus).
One could just imagine If the Felds acquired an NFL franchise, I can you just hear the topic at the first meeting of the new owners,( Well, we want to take a different approach to this event; you know, spice it up a bit, give it a new look. We are going to get rid of those old white lines going across the field and what's with them goal posts? Are those things necessary?
