In most of these shots they laid it out so that the big top was beyond the menagerie as you came in from the midway, having passed the sideshow.

In Nashville- on the old famous Centennial Park lot- as you entered the midway the sideshow was on one side and the big top was on the other side back behind some midway joints. And of course the marquee and menagerie were straight in front of you. You went into and thru the menagerie and then doubled back into the big top.

Many shows laid out this way on the Centennial Park lot, probably because it wasn't deep enough for the traditional layout seen here.
