This is the 1942-1978 winterquarters in Florence, NJ, on US 140 near the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The show previously wintered in Kingston, NY, where it began in 1892, followed by Baltimore for many years and then Trenton, NJ. The large barn to the right is where trucks were stored and, ironically, is now the location of an overnight truck parking area behind a Wawa store; the foreground is where a Burger King (to the left) and a Wawa store stand. The back, wooded area has long been for sale and has a historical site marker facing the parking areas. The quarters included 5 homes for family members, an elephant barn, horse barns, cookhouse, auto repair shop, 3 storage buildings, a truck storage facility (41 by 101 feet), and the ring barn (near the clown’s hand).
I sure remember this lot, Camped out there 1967&68,69 during off times also did shows in that ring barn along with Mr. Connely and Marsha Hunt working Ronnie, Old show mechanic Frank help him work on ring gear on that old Merry-go-round they used for schools groups great place to lay off also remember Silver Cloud RR that Charlie had and Halle-Se-lassie car they had on exhibit there Oh yes I learned to dislike Ostriches after helping them catch that darn thing on many occasions, Any body remember Frank Van-Fleet and Pop Corn?
We showed the Palasades park one year with the Hunt show 59 or 60 had a lot of fun as I recall.I worked for Roy Bush selling peanuts in the menagerie in front of the Elephant line up when I was a punk kid for extra spending money.
I spent a winter training six half arab, half quarter horses in their nice ring barn. for Marsha. Later Paul Nelson would finish their training and then Jack Joyce would buy them for RBBB. Jack would workthem on RBBB and then Mary Ruth would work them there. So they went around the horn from Herriott to Herriott with two fine American trainers in between. I am proud of that fact. johnny
98 or 99 while touring with the Vidbel show, we passed by the old Hunt show winter quarters on a nightly jump. I could see the elephant barn and ring barn still there. The next morning Bill Phillips said, "Want to go back and have a look"? So with camera in hand I hopped into his van and off we went. That very morning they had bull dozed the last of the buildings down just before we got there.I did however pull two gear heads out of the rubble. As Mr. Woodcock would say (Were on the wrong lot) Ps, Got to see and visit a bit with Bill Phillips and Martha in June this year.
