In his book WILD ANIMAL MAN Damoo Dhotre devotes several pages to describing how, while doubling for Johnny Weissmuller in a JUNGLE JIM film, he and his leopard Sonia staged a mock battle to the death. When the scene began, the leopard didn’t initially recognize him in strange makeup and wearing an unfamiliar costume. As described by Damoo, “Like a flash of lightning, she was out of the tree and down on the ground in front of me, and I suddenly realized she wasn’t acting . . . In the split second when I realized that she didn’t know me, I began talking as I have never talked before in a desperate effort to win recognition before her one final deadly leap. It worked . . . the sound of my voice breaking through the strange odor and the strange appearance won her back.”
