For this scene, the lion was required to do some serious acting. Not only did it have to enter the cave, walk over to the foot of Joan’s makeshift bed and stop, but it also had to lay down and assume an air of “on guard” alertness. (How many human actors could have carried off such an assignment with this degree of professionalism?) Those of you who have done movie work with your animals can better appreciate what was required just to get this one scene on film. (The lion has some even more complicated action to perform in the next chapter! Stay tuned!) Once again, that might be Betty Roth doubling for Betty Jane Rhodes.
