Thanks pal but I just looked it up Hames, a pair of curved metal (or wooden) pieces lying on the horse collar of a horse harness, taking the pull from the traces. So I guess the housing is the cover
That reminds me of the Danny Kaye rhyme of "pestle with the poison"
